FROM THE LIBRARY OF
SIR SIDNEY NOLAN
Part I.
This exhibition is now closed.
Room & Book is pleased to present a collection of books and catalogues from the library of Sir Sidney Nolan OM AC RA (1917-1992). Now part of the The Sidney Nolan Trust collection, Nolan’s vast library included an archive of exhibition catalogues and monographs of his own work spanning his entire career. Presented below is part one of a series of focused selling exhibitions comprising a select number of titles from Nolan’s book shelves including Nolan’s own copies of Paradise Garden (1971) his infamous artist book which exposed in poetry and image his complicated relationship with his early patrons John and Sunday Reed; Children’s Crusade (1973) Nolan’s collaborative project with friend and composer Benjamin Britten; as well as rare catalogues of Nolan’s major solo shows in the 1960s and 1970s. As an adjunct to the presentation, a small number of limited edition ‘Kelly’ prints published recently by The Trust from etching plates Nolan worked on at l’Atelier 17 Paris in 1958 are available for sale. This fascinating collection of material reveals Nolan’s passionate relationship with the printed page – as an artist, but also as poet, publisher and collector. 50% of all book and catalogue sales and 60% of print sales will go towards the work of The Sidney Nolan Trust.
In the last decade of his life, Sidney Nolan established himself at The Rodd, a 500-year-old farm on the English Welsh border. It was here that he set up the charity bearing his name and gifted a significant number of his paintings and works on paper. Today, the Trust ‘s mission is to build on Nolan’s extraordinary artistic legacy to maintain a vibrant and thriving centre for the arts, in a rural setting. The Trust also gives others the space and freedom to expand their boundaries through art, music, poetry and drama in order to produce ground-breaking contemporary work in the spirit of Nolan.
The Sidney Nolan Trust is a U.K. Registered Charity. Registered charity number 1161850.
