Cybernetic Serendipity. The Computer and the Arts. Studio International, 1968
Special issue of Studio International published to coincide with the landmark exhibition "Cybernetic Serendipity" curated by Jasia Reichardt at the ICA London in 1968. Dealing broadly with the potential of the computer and new technology to extend creativity and inventiveness, the exhibition included demonstrations of algorithms and devices for generating music, the computer's ability to produce text (both essays and poetry), Gustav Metzger's self-destructive Five Screens With Computer, a design for a new hospital, a computer programmed structure, and dance choreography. It was first shown at the ICA 2 August – 20 October 20, 1968 before touring to the United States. The exhibition was organised by Jasia Reichardt in collaboration with Mark Dowson (technological adviser) and Peter Schmidt (musical adviser). The exhibition and cover of the catalogue were designed by Franciszka Themerson.
