Fo(u)ndlings: an exhibition of 'found' art. Coracle Press, London, 1978
Rare catalogue in the form of 50 boxed exhibition checklist cards for "Fo(u)ndlings: an exhibition of 'found' art" at Coracle Press, 223 Camberwell New Road, London, SE5, 1978. The exhibition included Roger Ackling, Glen Baxter, Thomas A. Clark, Les Coleman, Simon Cutts, Patrick Hughes, Richard Long, Len McComb, Eduardo Paolozzi, Tom Phillips, Shelagh Wakely, and many others. Number 22 of an edition of 300 copies.
“A cardboard box of tags comprising the labels (also known in museum parlance as tombstones) for an “exhibition of found art”, this modest catalogue held in in plain brown stapled coffin, reveals the radical self-sufficiency of a small press like Coracle. Founded in 1975 by poet Simon Cutts, and named after a small boat for one person with no Keel, mast, or rudder, the press was guided by the concept that a book could stand alone – staking out space both architecturally a and virtually–and navigate out into the world. A book of poems might be conceived as an art object; gallery labels can become and exhibition space for words. Fo(u)ndlings features succinctly described familiar objects chose by Cutt’s colleagues. The items’ status is notably enhanced by their selection for display.”
