'Anthony Caro' Hayward Gallery and The Arts Council, London, 1969
Catalogue of Anthony Caro’s first career retrospective, curated by the American art critic and historian, Michael Fried for the Hayward Gallery, London, 25 January – 9 March, 1969. Caro was the first living British sculptor to have a solo exhibition at the Hayward Gallery. The exhibition spanned the upper and lower Hayward galleries as well as the outdoor sculpture terraces and “for the first time” Hayward Director Gabriel White writes in the foreword “the connected spaces and staircases of the building are used to provide view and visual surprises that the architects envisaged.” Caro himself said “ I know of no other gallery space so well suited to showing large sculpture.”
