Derek Carruthers studied art at King’s College, Newcastle University between 1953 and 1957 under Victor Pasmore and Richard Hamilton at a moment of radical change in the teaching of fine art in England. One of Pasmore’s first students at King’s to be taught the Basic Design course inspired by Bauhaus principles, Carruthers was part of the ‘Room 2’ group made up of students favoured by Pasmore. Carruthers showed in the Room 2 student exhibition at Hatton Gallery in 1957 in which the metal framework used for Richard Hamilton’s Man, Machine and Motion exhibition was re-used. Oval, dated 1976 but possibly made earlier, shows the influence of Pasmore and Hamilton in its use of the ellipse motif and fibreglass / resin cast which Carruthers used to produce algebraic curves in three dimensions, a process central to most of his work of the 1960s and 70s.
