Laurent Jiménez-Balaguer was born in 1928 in L’Hospitalet del Llobregat, Barcelona (Catalonia), Spain. He lived and worked in Paris from the early 1950s. This large-scale major work was made in Paris in 1960 during Jiménez-Balaguer’s early abstract period and includes a prominent sculptural element in relief which incorporates nails, sand and a highly textured surface. This work is closely related to a later work of 1961 in the collection of the Museum of Contemporary Art, Barcelona.

Jiménez-Balaguer is represented in numerous public collections throughout Spain, including the National Art Museum of Catalonia, Barcelona; Museu de l’Hospitalet, Barcelona; Museu de Montserrat, Barcelona; Fundació Vila Casas, Barcelona; Barcelona Museum of Contemporary Art, Museu d’Art Contemporani, Barcelona; Fons d'Art de la Generalitat de Catalunya, Barcelona; Museu de Ceràmicas, Manises; and Artecovi Fundación, Madrid. In France his work is represented in the collections of Musée de Chateauroux, Musée Municipal de Bourg-en-Bresse; Musée d’Art et Histoire de Rochefort; Grand Théâtre, Angers; and Centre d'art sacré Contemporain de Lille.
