Anne Pratt, Flowers and Their Associations, 1840 First Edition

£125.00

Rare First Edition of Anne Pratt’s first book, Flowers and Their Associations, published in 1840.

30 chapters across 409 pages with Pratt’s observations on 30 flowers including Primrose, Violet, Rosemary, Buttercup and Evening Primrose. Accompanied by Pratt’s own poetry as well as excerpts from Keats, Milton, Henry Kirk White, Wordsworth and many more.

Anne Pratt was one of the most popular English botanical artists of the second half of the 19th century. Published in 1840 when she was 34, Flowers and Their Associations was Pratt’s first book. It includes several examples of her celebrated botanical Illustrations reproduced in vivid colour using chromolithograph process. The “Orchis” example is particularly dazzling. Pratt rose to prominence with a later book, Wild Flowers of the Year (1852–1853), which was dedicated to Queen Victoria who personally requested copies of all of Pratt’s works.

This copy, originally acquired from Westerton’s Library Knightsbridge (presumably shortly after publication as per the small sticker to the inside front cover) comes from the library of the Pre-Raphaelite expert Dr Alastair Grieve. It is inscribed to “Elizabeth Dowson from an Absent Friend November 12th 1847”. Printed by Manning and Mason, 12 Ivy Lane, Paternoster Row , London.
