The British Avant Garde, An Exhibition at the New York Cultural Center, May 1971
Catalogue of the exhibition organised by Charles Harrison at the New York Cultural Center in conjunction with Studio International, May 19-August 29, 1971. Richard Long’s “Stone on Isle of Skye” 1970 on the cover. The catalogue for the exhibition contains the main body of the contents of the May 1971 issue of Studio International including Gilbert & George’s, “There Were Two Young Men – A Magazine Sculpture”.
As writer, curator and director of the Barry Flanagan Estate, Jo Melvin has written, “In September 1970, Harrison informed the artists that as the project was a joint venture with Studio International’s May 1971 issue he intended to commission them to make work “direct for the printed page”.18 These contributions would be treated by the artists as an extension of the exhibition, as well as a record of it.19The results formed a dedicated issue of Studio International, acknowledging the NYCC’s involvement. An extra run, minus the masthead, was printed as the exhibition catalogue.” – Jo Melvin, “The British Avant Garde: A Joint Venture Between the New York Cultural Center and Studio International Magazine”, in British Art Studies, Issue 3, Summer 2016.
Artists include Keith Arnatt, Sue Arrowsmith, Terry Atkinson, David Bainbridge, Michael Baldwin, Victor Burgin, Colin Crumplin, Andrew Dipper, David Dye, Barry Flanagan, Gilbert & George, Harold Hurrell, Richard Long, Roelof Louw, Bruce McLean, Gerald Newman, David Tremlett.
