Catalogue/ Announcement pamphlet for the first two exhibitions held at “Exhibition Space”, first Floor 49 Gowers Walk London E1 8BS 27 April - 2 June 1984 and 27 April – 2 June 1985. Exhibition 1 was presented in two phases: Paintings by Trevor Clarke and Ray Thomson followed by relief constructions by Catherine Pearson. Exhibition 2 was titled “Drawing: a presentation of formal systems instantiated as finished drawings” and included 44 artists including Douglas Allsop, Richard Bell, Sarah Bray, Kate Gordon, Malcolm Hughes, Tim Johnson, John Law, Vera Molnar, Jean Spencer, Ray Thomson, Gary Woodley and others.

Exhibiting Space was in Jean Spencer’s words “an ideal kind of collaboration” which “came about from 1983 when Ray Thomson’s Whitechapel studio would be converted each month into Exhibiting Space where artists, architects, theoreticians, historians, linguists, musicians et al would gather in an attempt to break down the barriers between art practice and art theory and to explore connections with other disciplines. Jean Spencer was the youngest member of the Systems group whose activities reached their climax in an Arts Council touring exhibition, first shown at the Whitechapel in 1972.”
