A very rare ephemeral item associated with Richard Hamilton’s iconic image which has come to define a crucial period in Britain’s cultural history: The exhibition announcement card, for “Richard Hamilton, Swingeing London ’67. People. Graphics 1963-68” held at Robert Fraser Gallery, London, April 15 – May 20 1969.
On 12th February 1967, Mick Jagger and the gallery owner Robert Fraser were arrested for drug possession after a party at Keith Richard’s house in West Sussex. For his exhibition at Robert Fraser Gallery in 1969, Richard Hamilton created six different screenprints based the now iconic photograph published in the Daily Mail showing Jagger and Fraser hand-cuffed together in a police van enroute to Chichester Magistrates Court.
The 2015 exhibition “A Strong Sweet Smell of Incense” curated by Brian Clarke at Pace Gallery borrowed its title from the police report on the party.
