IL5 – Information of The Institute of Lightweight Structures, October 1972

£395.00

Issue 5 of IL was dedicated to convertible roofs. Contributions by Dieter Blumel, Rainer Graefe, Jurgen Hennicke, Friedmann Kugel, Uta Pankoke, Frei Otto, Hans-Joachim Schock, Jorg Wagner. Texts in German and English.

The legendary experimental architecture journal, IL, was published by the Institute for Lightweight Structures, Stuttgart University, directed by Frei Otto (1925-2015) from 1964 until 1991. The pages of IL present the institute's interest in going beyond the discipline of architecture and a fascination with experimentation which underpinned Frei Otto’s work. He spoke of the need to understand the "physical, biological and technical processes which give rise to objects", concerns evident in the images of and texts inspired by natural phenomena such as bird skulls, soap bubbles, and spiders' webs which are included in these scarce issues. With his interdisciplinary research and teaching in the field of wide-span surface structures and natural constructions, Otto developed the IL into a globally recognised centre of lightweight construction. He was awarded with the Pritzker Prize in 2015.
