Joseph Albers original serigraph "Either/or" 1973

In 1973, York University, Toronto, awarded honorary doctorates to Josef and Anni Albers. An original serigraph by Josef Albers, “Either/Or” , was produced in an edition of 500 (numbered and unsigned) and laid loosely into the catalogue which was published to accompany the  exhibition held to mark the occasion, October 26 – November 16, 1973. The catalogue itself includes a square diagram ; foreword by the curator Michael Greenwood; a portrait photograph of Josef Albers by Jon Naar, three texts by Albers: “On My Work”, “The colour in my paintings”, “On My Homage to The Square”; a list of works and biography.  

The following text is printed on the inside cover of the catalogue. “Josef Albers: Either/or original serigraph in edition limited to 500 copies, numbered 1-500. Printed by Ives-Sillman, New Haven, Connecticut , 1973. “ The print is numbered 322/500 in pencil lower left.

Two cards are stapled to the front of the catalogue. The card on the right is a compliments card from the York University Faculty of Fine Arts. The handwritten note reads: “To Frank Thistlethwaite: I hope to see you in May on a British Council tour which I am undertaking.” The card is signed, “Joe Green”. Joseph Green was the Dean of the Faculty of Fine Arts (1973-1980) at York University, Toronto. Frank Thistlethwaite was founding vice-chancellor of the University of East Anglia, from 1961 to 1980.  The second card has no identifying marks. It reads: “Joseph Green: He visited the UK in May 1974 and tried to arrange a visit to UEA bu this proved impossible to arrange since Dean, FAM was on jury service.”

Print Condition: The print is loosely laid into the catalogue and covered with a loose protective tissue guard. The top left corner of the print shows approx 7 small indents where the staples that hold the library card to the front cover have gently pressed into the paper. The bottom right corner is slightly creased and there is a small bump to the lower right edge. Catalogue condition: The lower right corner of the catalogue is slightly thumbed. Two library cards are stapled to the front cover. Impression marks from the staples are visible on the title page. Otherwise the catalogue is in very good condition.
