A very nice copy of the scarce October 1938 issue of London Bulletin edited by the Belgian Surrealist artist/ poet E.L.T Mesens and Roland Penrose. Including Herbert Read’s piece on Picasso’s Guernica and a photograph by Dora Maar of the work in Picasso’s studio. At the time of publishing (October 1938), Guernica was on display at the New Burlington Galleries in Mayfair accompanied by Picasso’s preparatory paintings, sketches and studies for it. Associated poems by Paul Eluard and George Reavey follow the article on Guernica.

This issue also includes contributions by Andre Breton, Frederick Brockway on de Chirico, Jean Fraysse on Appollinaire, Georges Hugnet on Wolfgang Paalen, Ruthven Todd on John Piper, as well as catalogues of the Giorgio de Chirico and Humphrey Jennings exhibitions held concurrently at the London Gallery.

The London Bulletin was published by The London Gallery located in Cork Street. Established in 1937 with E. L. T. Mesens as director, assisted by Roland Penrose and Humphrey Jennings, the gallery became a centre for Surrealism in England. Mesens and Penrose claimed that London Bulletin was the only avant garde publication in Britain concerned with contemporary poetry and art.
