Alfred H. Barr was the first director of the Museum of Modern Art in New York, a position he held until 1943. Barr curated the first American Picasso retrospective in 1940 entitled, Picasso: Forty Years of His Art. Barr later published an updated and expanded version of the catalogue for this exhibition under the title, Picasso: Fifty Years of His Art, published in 1946. That same year, Harvard University granted Barr a Ph.D. for his work on Picasso.
