'Picasso' Tate Gallery, London, 1960

£19.00

Catalogue of the groundbreaking Picasso retrospective organised by Roland Penrose at the Tate Gallery London 6th of July to 18 September 1960 – the exhibition which changed the course of British art for ever. At the time it was the most extensive retrospective of the artist's work ever staged and is considered to mark the moment modernism arrived in Britain. Penrose writes in his introduction “It is largely due to Pablo Picasso that the conception of art as a powerful emotional medium, rather than a search for the perfection of ideal forms of beauty, has become accepted among the artists of the twentieth century.” Writing to Picasso soon after the opening Penrose wrote: "My dear Pablo, the Picasso explosion… is overwhelming. Already over 10,000 people have visited the show. There are queues the entire day until eight o'clock in the evening when the gallery closes. You have conquered London – people are enchanted and dazzled by your presence on the walls."
