In 1982 Leonard French was commissioned by Harry Oppenheimer to design a mural for the Brenthurst Library in Johannesburg. After several weeks of extensive travel in South Africa, French returned to his Heathcote studio where he worked on the 2.75 x 5 metre mural (The Bridge) for the next 18 months. The library was opened in February 1984 by the distinguished writer Alan Paton, who in his opening address described the mural as “a forecast of the cataclysm”. The paintings in this exhibition were painted in 1984-85 and are a continuation of the themes and ideas which were inspired by French’s experiences in South Africa.
