“There is a weird mix of innocence and decadence in the work of Marcel Dzama, the kind of psychological alloy that occurs in semi-conscious states. As surreal narrative shifts occur in dreams, especially those that are conjured up just before wakefulness, so too it is impossible to make sense of Dzama's images. We identify with them because they are like the stories we tell ourselves when no one else is listening: candid, shameless, childish, vulgar, cruel and tender. Recent work here tends to be more emphatic, even more vivid with its occasional nakedness, militaristic parades and rituals, amputations and ominous passivity, arguable in response to a real world gone wrong. Like the best children's authors, writing equally for adults, Dzama understands that fun is not always good, clean and / or honest. It is, on the other hand, honestly, all-too-human. This catalogue accompanies Dzama's first major museum exhibition in the UK and includes his most recent work from 2003-2006.” – Carter Foster
