R.B. Kitaj 'The Human Clay' Hayward Gallery, 1976
Catalogue of the important group exhibition of British figurative painting selected by R.B. Kitaj held at the Hayward Gallery, London in 1976. The exhibition historicised British post-war painting and did much to reshape perceptions of contemporary art by reviving interest in figurative painting as a counter to conceptualism and minimalism.
The exhibition is noteworthy not least for the catalogue which features the influential essay by Kitaj in which he first coined the term “School of London” within which he incorporated the artists Michael Andrews, Frank Auerbach, Lucian Freud, David Hockney, Leon Kossoff and Francis Bacon. This loose term continues to define a group of artists working in the mid-to-late twentieth century whose shared focus, though their work remained stylistically diverse, was the representation of the figure.
