Living Painters. Duncan Grant. With an Introduction by Roger Fry, Published by Leonard and Virginia Woolf at The Hogarth Press, London, 1930.
This issue of Living Painters was planned as the first in a series, but no further issues were published. The Introduction is provided by Roger Fry following which there are 24 leaves of short captions (printed verso only) and 24 leaves of full-page plates. The original publisher's stiff card tan covers are printed in black with the upper cover decorated with a design by Duncan Grant. The total print run, combining the first (1924) and new (1930) editions, was only 1010 copies. A near fine copy of a scarce title not often found in such collectible condition.
In his introduction, Roger Fry places particular emphasis on Duncan Grant's decorative work: "When he was working at the Omega workshops his fellow-artists all recognised the peculiar charm, the unexpected originality, and the rare distinction of his ideas, and I should be inclined to say that some of the designs which he then made for carpets, for marquetry, and for needlework represent the high-water mark of applied design in England."
