Artist, illustrator, gallery director and teacher, born in Edinburgh, where he continued to live. He studied at the College of Art there, 1949–1953, then after Army service in 1954–1956 was art master at Duns Scotus Academy, 1956–1967. In 1963 Demarco was a founder-member of Traverse Theatre. The 1960s also saw him launch the Richard Demarco Gallery and become elected to SSA and RSW. The gallery became a focal point for innovative art and theatre, and in 1975 Demarco gained a Scottish Arts Council Award for services to the contemporary Scottish art world. Demarco was closely involved in promoting eastern European events in Britain, in 1976 gaining the Gold Award of the Polish People’s Republic. He directed the Edinburgh Arts Summer School, was closely involved in the Edinburgh Festival and was a visiting lecturer at over 50 educational institutions in Europe and North America.
Red tape and reliable funding were problems Demarco enterprises commonly encountered. Demarco’s publications included The Artist as Explorer, 1978, and The Road to Meikle Seggie, 1979. He published a number of suites of prints, including The Malta Suite for Editions Alecto, 1970. In 2000, Stanley Picker Gallery, Kingston University, held the exhibition On the Road to Meikle Seggie, and a symposium celebrating the seventieth birthday of Demarco, who was Professor of European Cultural Studies there. Demarco Focus 1, 2 and 3, at the Dean Gallery, Edinburgh, 2003–2005, provided a comprehensive survey of the artist’s life and work. Victoria & Albert Museum, Scottish Arts Council and Philadelphia Museum of Art hold his work.
