Uncommonly nice First Edition copy of the catalogue designed by Gordon House for the seminal exhibition, Situation: An Exhibition of British Abstract Painting, R.B.A. Galleries, London, 1960.

It has been noted that this exhibition by artists of the Situation group marked a significant move away from the dominance of St Ives school abstract painting. Roger Coleman’s text is somewhat antagonistic towards St Ives and also describes the preference for painting at large scale (influenced by recent developments in American painting) which the exhibited artists shared.

Featuring the work of Gillian Ayres, Bernard Cohen, Harold Cohen, Peter Coviello, Robyn Denny, John Epstein, Peter Hobbs, Gordon House, William Green, John Hoyland, Gwyther Irwin, Robert (Bob) Law, Henry Mundy, John Plumb, Ralph Rumney, Richard Smith, Peter Stroud, William Turnbull, Marc Vaux, Brian Young. 3pp introduction by Roger Coleman followed by 10 pages of monochrome plates featuring 20 illustrations of the 52 works listed.
