Muneyoshi (Soetsu) YANAGI (1889-1961) was a thinker, religious philosopher, and art scholar who founded the Mingei National Art Movement in Japan which later became a global movement, due in part to the influence of Soetsu’s colleagues, Bernard Leach and Shoji Hamada, who brought its philosophy to the United Kingdom in 1920. Suzuki Shigeo (1914-2003) was introduced to Soetsu Yanagi in 1935. In 1937, he studied design under Serizawa Keisuke. In 1953, he became an assistant to Bernard Leach.
