Scarce catalogue designed by Richard Hamilton for an exhibition of works by Victor Pasmore at the Hatton Gallery Newcastle upon Tyne 1960. 26 large monochrome images of Pasmore’s work made between 1955 and 1960 mostly photographed by the artists Noel Forster and Richard Hamilton including relief constructions, transparent constructions, spatial constructions, paintings and the Peterlee architectural project. Also includes a photographic portrait by Richard Hamilton of Pasmore in the British Pavilion at the 1960 Venice Biennale in front of his work ‘Linear Motif in black and white’ (1959-1960); installation photographs by Richard Hamilton of ‘An Exhibit’ Pasmore’s exhibition made in collaboration with Hamilton and Lawrence Alloway shown in Newcastle and at the ICA London in 1957; as well as an introduction by Ronald A Davey and interview with Pasmore by Leif Sjoberg of Columbia University.

Hamilton’s signature spiral binding and coloured page dividers (in this case black) common to the series of catalogues Hamilton designed whilst at the Fine Art Department of Durham University, including Sidney Nolan (1961 - available at Room & Book), Joe Tilson (1963), Francis Picabia (1964) and Eduardo Paolozzi (1965).

In 1954 Pasmore was appointed Master of painting in the School of Fine Art, King’s College, University of Durham, a post he held until 1961. As a progressive teacher Pasmore’s influence was instrumental in changing art education. Three years prior to his appointment to Durham, in 1951, Pasmore had made his first abstract reliefs, using Perspex and wood. The critic Herbert Read called it the most revolutionary event in post-war British art. Whilst at Durham Pasmore collaborated with Ernö Goldfinger and Helen Phillips on an exhibit for This is Tomorrow at the Whitechapel Art Gallery in 1956 and with Richard Hamilton and Lawrence Alloway on ‘an Exhibit’ shown at Newcastle and the I.C.A. in 1957.
