Erica Van Horn is an American artist and writer who has been living in Ireland since 1996, and runs Coracle Press with the poet Simon Cutts from their home in rural Tipperary. Van Horn’s work often takes as its starting point local customs or idiosyncrasies of language, creating books and ephemera that present frank documentation of sets of observations. 14 Blackthorns was the first book produced by Cutts and Van Horn in Ireland, it responds to the finding of a bundle of blackthorn sticks in their barn, with Van Horn’s silhouetted drawings of the sticks interleaved with texts by Cutts. The book tells of the bundle of sticks being ‘found/ in the soft floor/ of the barn/ tied with baling/ twine & bound/ for market’. A ‘fascicule’, the book’s subtitle, can denote an incremental part, bundles of connective tissue in the human body, or quite simply, bundle of sticks.
