Catalogue of an exhibition curated by Bryan Robertson at Whitechapel Art Gallery, London, May – June 1960. Essay by John Rothenstein, 23 b/w and one colour plate, 166 item catalogue.

Scholarly interest in de Maistre has increased recently as art historians begin to more closely examine the relationship between Roy de Maistre and Francis Bacon. de Maistre was an important figure in Bacon’s early career, providing him with guidance around technique, introducing him to useful contacts and involving him in exhibitions, as well as guiding him in his transition from design to painting.

As Simon Pierse has written “Bryan Robertson was [a] key figure in bringing Australian artists together [in London] and in strengthening friendships, both in his curation of the Whitechapel show of Australian contemporary painting [see cat. no. 11 and 12] and through parties and Sunday lunches at his home. He was also central to the promotion of the ‘Australian school’ of painting in London through his writings for the London Magazine and elsewhere.”
