Virginia Surtees’s copy of Dante Gabriel Rossetti by Ernest Radford circa 1900. Her bookplate on the front free endpaper. Given by Virginia Surtees to Dr Alastair Grieve in 2011 as stated in the inscription to the front free endpaper. Another indecipherable much earlier ownership inscription also to the endpapers.  “Virginia Surtees, who has died aged 100, was an art historian whose two-volume catalogue of the complete works of Dante Gabriel Rossetti, published in 1971, initiated the revival of interest in the then-neglected artist. The book’s closely researched catalogue entries broke new ground, setting a standard of scholarship for the study of pre-Raphaelite painting to which a generation of art historians aspired.” – Richard Dorment, Virginia Surtees obituary, The Guardian, Tue 5 Dec 2017
