Alan Bowness 'Kurt Schwitters: 1887-1948' Arts Council, London, 1959
Catalogue of an exhibition of works by Kurt Schwitters (1887 – 1948) organised by the Arts Council of Great Britain in 1959. This exhibition followed Schwitter’s ‘rediscovery’ the previous year thanks to Philip Granville’s exhibition at the Lord’s Gallery in London in 1958. The Lord’s Gallery exhibition later toured to the Hatton Gallery, Newcastle (16 – 31 January 1959) as part of an effort to increase awareness of Schwitter’s work and amid the ongoing concern for the future of the Schwitters’ Merzbarn, a major work he had constructed in a barn near Kendall in Cumbria. The Hatton exhibition included more than 100 Schwitters Merz collages and sculptures and was influential in discussions which lead eventually to the Hatton Gallery’s acquisition of Schwitters’ Merz Barn Wall six year later. The Arts Council approached Richard Hamilton to undertake the project in 1965. A member of staff at Hatton Gallery from 1954, Hamilton curated a number of important exhibitions at the Hatton Gallery, for which he often also designed the printed material including exhibition catalogues.
